Sperr Marine VisionMaster FT Radar

Shipcrew complaint that stbd radar display show monitor comms alarm. Attend onboard and found radar working perfectly ok. Checked and found monitor was Melford Monitor. Measured the serial com output and input, found PCIO had output RS422 to monitor via TSCM. Measured TSCF and found no active signal received. Press menu of Melford monitor and enter password 3102. Scroll down to option 1 folder and found Coms Std was set to off. Select 422 and RS Coms Ntw = multi, found 2 way communication between them by looking at commissioning - communication - port monitor. Select monitor 9600 and press start. Monitor Comms alarm gone and restart system. System works perfectly ok.

Sperry Marine Bridge Master E Masthead Transceiver

This ship complaint that the radar not rotating. Cannot go to transmit. Checked and found as per description. Suspect motor belt broken. Climb up the mast and open the antenna cover, there was a very strong burning smell came out of the unit. visually checked and could only see a spark or arking burn mark on the magnetron green/yellow lead. So decided to replaced magnetron and complete the job.
But somehow my six sense told me this strong burning smell could not possible came from arking of magnetron lead. Further observed and could hear a very small arking sound somewhere within the unit.
Suddently i started to realise something was not right behind the input pcb. It located with AC line filter underneath. As i observe water ingrease into the unit, it was very clear that shorting had occurred.
The AC 220V line filter was badly burnt.
As i do not bring line filter pcb with me, i decided to bypass the line filter by connect direct to AC 220V. As observed some oxidization on the cables including the scanner on/off switch cable, cut the bad cable and resolder them. Also change the input pcb as observed some connectors pin oxidize.
Started the radar and found radar echo show on screen. But radar echo was weak.
Somehow, tuning was not working properly, setting the video I/P and coase tune does not help.
Suspect the fault can be due to receiver pcb, LNFE or modulator pcb not working properly.
Will return to ship when chances comes.

Sperry Marine Voyage Master GI VDR/SVDR UPS Charger
The ship owner has request to replace UPS battery. Carry 10 bank of UPS battery on board weighted approx. 25kg. Found that the UPS charger was totally dead. Pressing the on/off switch does not made any different to the system. Remove the upper UPS rack and lower Battery rack. Found that the UPS charger 4 x Cmos power transistors were damaged. Also observed one of the 24Vdc fan mounted in front of the Charger was jammed and very hard to turn even by hand. Luckily, ship got another faulty UPS charger, cannibalize from the other unit. Found the other unit 24Vdc fan also not rotating smoothly, but condition better then the jammed one. After replaced the 4 x power transistor, connect back the system. System startup and work well, but only work for approx. 30mins. Due to overheat and system failed again. Open up cover again, found another 3 x power transistors faulty. Also found the battery bank fuse blown. cannibalize from other defective unit and resolder all defective components and replaced all working components. System startup again, this time was lucky, it works fine after one hour.
